Background of the Study

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a genetic blood disorder characterized by chronic anemia and periodic episodes of severe pain due to vaso-occlusive crises. Effective pain management is crucial for improving the quality of life of SCD patients. Nurses are often the primary caregivers for these patients, responsible for pain assessment, administration of analgesics, patient education, and emotional support. Their role is vital in both acute care settings and in guiding patients on pain management strategies post-discharge.

Research indicates that nurses' attitudes and knowledge significantly impact the quality of pain management in SCD patients. Positive nurse-patient interactions and timely pain interventions can reduce the frequency and severity of pain episodes.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the critical role of nurses in managing SCD-related pain, challenges such as inadequate training, biases, and systemic constraints can hinder effective pain management. At the State Specialist Hospital in Bauchi, there is limited data on how nurses perceive their roles in SCD pain management and the factors that influence their practices. Understanding these aspects is essential for developing targeted interventions to enhance care quality for SCD patients.

Objectives of the Study

1. To explore nurses' perceptions of their roles in managing pain among SCD patients at State Specialist Hospital, Bauchi.

2. To assess the level of knowledge and attitudes of nurses toward pain management in SCD patients.

3. To identify barriers faced by nurses in effectively managing pain in SCD patients.

Research Questions

1. How do nurses perceive their roles in managing pain among SCD patients at State Specialist Hospital, Bauchi?

2. What is the level of knowledge and what are the attitudes of nurses toward pain management in SCD patients?

3. What barriers do nurses face in effectively managing pain in SCD patients?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurses at State Specialist Hospital, Bauchi, have a clear understanding of their roles in managing pain among SCD patients.

2. There is a significant relationship between nurses' knowledge and attitudes and the effectiveness of pain management in SCD patients.

3. Identifying and addressing barriers can improve nurses' effectiveness in managing pain among SCD patients.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in various departments at the State Specialist Hospital, Bauchi, who are involved in the care of SCD patients. Limitations may include self-reported data, which can be subject to bias, and the variability in individual nurse experiences and education levels.

Definitions of Terms

• Sickle Cell Disease (SCD): A hereditary blood disorder characterized by the production of abnormal hemoglobin, leading to distorted (sickle-shaped) red blood cells.

• Pain Management: The process by which healthcare professionals assess and provide interventions to alleviate patient discomfort.
